ELDC Flood Team Nominated for National Award

Local Champions!
Cleansing Team nominated for a national flood award
Your votes count!!

OUT of 350 entries in a national awards scheme for local government, East Lindsey District Council’s Cleansing Team has been nominated as a National Finalist. The Team have reached the final voting stage for the work they have done supporting residents during the flooding, the fire in Skegness and the long term clean up of property and houses.

Reaching the final six is a major achievement for the Council and recognition of how we compare to other councils. Commenting on the announcement, Leader of the Council, Cllr Doreen Stephenson said: “I am very proud of this team. They were on the ground during a difficult and traumatic emergency providing frontline support. Later, when the spotlight had moved away, they continued to work with some of our most vulnerable residents providing practical support. Cutting through red tape and dealing with people on the basis of need was key to providing honest, direct help using common sense.”

From May 1, 2008, East Lindsey residents can vote for their local flood champions at www.localgovernmentchannel.com as the team goes for gold against six other local authorities from across the country.

A video of the team’s work will also be posted on the website.
The Award recognises the work of employees during the response to the flood, handing out sandbags and helping residents protect their homes; whilst also focusing on the need for support over subsequent months and being a ‘champion’ when no-one else seemed to care.

Joanne Neal was one member of the cleansing team who spent time with residents helping them get back to their feet: “I met some lovely people who simply wanted support and a helping hand. The area I focussed on was Horncastle and I met a range of people who simply didn’t want to ask for help. Having spent time with them they realised they couldn’t go it alone, nor did they have to. One elderly couple in particular touched my heart and still today, eight months on, I visit them when I’m in Horncastle. The Team spent hours scrubbing their floor and removing mud from their home. All they wanted was normality and I hope our help has put them back on track,” she said.

The event, which wasa well attended, was organised by Krislam’el Wedding Dresses, with displays from local businesses dealing in bridal wear. Displays included wedding hats, pretty seat covers, a chocolate fountain, wedding jewellery and bridai bouquets. Local models gave a fashion show of the latest wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses and pageboy’s outfits.

Phone Parking Trials in Skegness

Written by Angela Gooch on Friday, April 25th, 2008 in Skegness Latest News.

Phone parking to be trialled in Skegness’ this summer
parking by mobile phone trials in SkegnessPHONE parking will be trialled on the Foreshore Car Parks in Skegness this summer season, allowing car park users to pay their car-parking tariff by making a call or sending a text message.

The new service goes live on April 28th, 2008.  Each car park taking part in the trial will display clear signage explaining how the system works, along with a car park reference number.

The first time you use the service you will have to register.  You simply provide a valid credit or debit card and your vehicles registration number.  You can register in advance by telephoning 0844 844 9996 or by visiting www.verrus.com

This scheme is already being used in other parts of the country, including Derby, Nottingham, York and closer to home, Lincoln.  If you’ve used Verrus Phone parking before elsewhere in the country you will not have to re-register your details, as the system will recognise your phone number.

When paying by phone no ticket is required and your information is automatically passed onto the car park attendant’s handheld computer so he can see that you’ve paid to park and how long you’ve paid for.

“It does cost up to 20p extra to use this service but it saves scrambling around for change. The phone system can even send a text message before your parking expires or allows you to top it up without having to go back to the car,” explained the Council’s Trading Team Leader, David Honman.

David continued: “It’s important that we embrace new technologies and make it as easy as possible for people to use our services.  If successful this scheme could be rolled out across all East Lindsey District Council run Car Parks next year. “

The conventional car park meters will still be in place for those who chose not to use this service.
