Bolas New Plans for Skegness Seafront

Written by Angela Gooch on Friday, May 9th, 2008 in Skegness Latest News, Town evolution.

NEW PLANS UNVEILED FOR SKEGNESS SEAFRONT DEVELOPMENTS

New concept designs have been drawn up for the redevelopment of the Bola’s fire ravaged Parade Complex site on Grand Parade Skegness and for proposed development of land to the North of the entrance to Tower Gardens also on Grand Parade (the latter in the ownership of East Lindsey District Council).
Taj Bola has now commissioned a firm of nationally acclaimed architects and an urban planning consultant to develop the visuals into plans to submit to East Lindsey District Council for a planning application.
Taj Bola said “The original ideas that we had would have been wrong for Skegness we have listened to the comments that people have made and realise that the town does not want a city centre or Las Vegas development on its seafront. We however need to move forward as a resort. This can be achieved in a number of ways which we have incorporated in our new plans”.
The proposed buildings are representative of style and quality incorporating high standards in terms of environmental design and energy efficiency (green tourism) that can only be a positive statement for the town.
Neither of the Bola’s developments will require additional service or access roads to be not constructed through Tower Gardens nor will the proposed Piazza Building North of the entrance take anything from the gateway to the park, in fact it will provide an open face.
Two floors of new activity leisure will be the key to the all weather Piazza project with the introduction into the resort of an ice rink, simulated skydiving, rock climbing wall, indoor themed golf and a venue for presenting live children’s entertainment.
Tourist lead retail units and a continental brand restaurant in a Mediterranean setting would occupy the ground floor of the climate-controlled building with fountains and palm tree’s with access from Grand Parade to a sun court enclosure over looking Tower Gardens.
Mr Taj Bola said, “Like many other seaside towns the seafront needs more investment. The time is right for investing in Skegness but it has to be based on providing sustainable new leisure and not more of the same, we have not only to attract a wider audience but offer the local community things that will appeal to them”.

Skegness Holiday Guide 1958

We are pleased to say that we now have the Official 1958 Skegness Holiday Guide as published by the Skegness Urban District Council online for you to browse.

We have seven (and counting) of these vintage holiday guides, ranging from 1909 to 1971 in our collection of Skegness memorabilia, and it is our intention to share them with our visitors by uploading them to our Skegness Photo Gallery. The vintage holiday guides are a valuable source of Skegness history, being crammed with local business adverts, entertainment and photos.

As you can imagine, it’s a laborious task scanning the books in - some have a hundred pages! So we’ve just included the adverts for the larger hotels and ommited the smaller ones. But please ask if you want a look-up in the years below for a hotel or guest house which we haven’t uploaded. Ofcourse, we have scanned the main holiday information pages and pictures.

The front covers of the 1909, 1971, 1948, 1947 and 1925 holiday guides are shown below:

May Day Bank Holiday Skegness

Written by Angela Gooch on Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 in Skegness Latest News.

Well the May Day bank holiday has got off on a good start in Skegness. The weather has so far been sunny and mild with a bracing breeze on the seafront, but holidaymakers weren’t put off from sitting on the beach. The town was quite crowded and it looks like trade is improving for Skegness business people after a slow start to the season when snow hit Skegness at Easter. We were out and about in Skeg Vegas and snapped this cool bunch of local girls having a fun on Tower Esplanade. (Girls, email me for a copy of the pic)

ELDC Flood Team Nominated for National Award

Written by Angela Gooch on Wednesday, April 30th, 2008 in Skegness Latest News.

Local Champions!
Cleansing Team nominated for a national flood award
Your votes count!!

OUT of 350 entries in a national awards scheme for local government, East Lindsey District Council’s Cleansing Team has been nominated as a National Finalist. The Team have reached the final voting stage for the work they have done supporting residents during the flooding, the fire in Skegness and the long term clean up of property and houses.

Reaching the final six is a major achievement for the Council and recognition of how we compare to other councils. Commenting on the announcement, Leader of the Council, Cllr Doreen Stephenson said: “I am very proud of this team. They were on the ground during a difficult and traumatic emergency providing frontline support. Later, when the spotlight had moved away, they continued to work with some of our most vulnerable residents providing practical support. Cutting through red tape and dealing with people on the basis of need was key to providing honest, direct help using common sense.”

From May 1, 2008, East Lindsey residents can vote for their local flood champions at www.localgovernmentchannel.com as the team goes for gold against six other local authorities from across the country.

A video of the team’s work will also be posted on the website.
The Award recognises the work of employees during the response to the flood, handing out sandbags and helping residents protect their homes; whilst also focusing on the need for support over subsequent months and being a ‘champion’ when no-one else seemed to care.

Joanne Neal was one member of the cleansing team who spent time with residents helping them get back to their feet: “I met some lovely people who simply wanted support and a helping hand. The area I focussed on was Horncastle and I met a range of people who simply didn’t want to ask for help. Having spent time with them they realised they couldn’t go it alone, nor did they have to. One elderly couple in particular touched my heart and still today, eight months on, I visit them when I’m in Horncastle. The Team spent hours scrubbing their floor and removing mud from their home. All they wanted was normality and I hope our help has put them back on track,” she said.
