New Owners for VBar

Written by Angela Gooch on Monday, February 4th, 2008 in Nightclubs Pubs, Skegness Latest News.

bola brothers skegnessThe V (Variety) Bar was taken over on Monday by Taj and TK Bola (left), owners of the Parade Complex in Skegness, which was destroyed by fire last year. The aquisition of the bar, which is in a promintent position in Skegness, is the first of many planned by the Bola Brothers.

The pair are considering a new name for the pub, planning to keep some features of the VBar, whilst introducing some new ideas.

The special ‘VBar Cabaret’, which was the brainchild of former owners, Carl Reece and Neil Morgan, has been axed, to be eventually replaced with ’something more of a sports theme.’

Here’s what WE said about the VBar when it first opened:

The V Bar was launched in Skegness by owners Carl Reece and Neil Morgan at Easter 2006 - and it’s rocketed to one of Skegness’ top nightspots!
It’s right in the centre of Skegness and boasts a superb design and decor.
The V Bar has it’s own cabaret and puts on live shows every night except Tuesdays.

FREE LIVE ENTERTAINMENT - The Cast of the V Bar

The stage design is very unusual - it’s ON TOP of the bar, so whether you’re upstairs or downstairs you can see the act!

The V Bar show is absolutely fabulous and completely FREE!

*no charge at the door!
*a great act, spectacular costumes and lighting effects!
*the show’s on stage at twenty minute intervals
*the only pub in Skegness to put on a show almost every night!

It’s a MUST to see - especially on a Saturday night!

There’s a Carvery during the daytime. The Chef , Skegness born Graham Kerr, formerly worked on the QE1 and QE2 -and he was Personal Chef to President Jimmy Carter - it don’t get better than that!

The V Bar often has fancy dress themed nights like the recent ‘Beach Party’.
There’s a VIP area upstairs where you can reserve tables if you wish!
When we visited the V Bar the London Theatre Group were in the VIP lounge.
The group were the cast from ‘Josephs Technicoloured Dreamcoat’ currently showing at the Embassy Theatre Skegness.

New Year Celebrations 2005 in Skegness

The seaside town of Skegness is very popular over Christmas and New Year. Traditionally, all the party goers don fancy dress on New Year’s Eve and head for a good night out in the pubs and night clubs.
Skegness Video captured some of the fancy dress outfits on camcorder.

The resort was ‘buzzing’ with pretty girls, we snapped some busy bees as they were making a beeline for the nearest pub!

Hey! we’re videoing nights in Skegness not Arabian Nights!

Unemployed now until next year, Santa joined in the celebrations. He looked very plump! Must be all those mince pies!

We approached a passing policeman asking him if he had any comments on the New Year’s Eve celebrations. He said he didn’t want to be filmed as he was a fire arms officer often working in anti terrorist areas. He commented that the evening was going smoothly and wished every one an enjoyable evening and a Happy New Year!

As the magical hour approached, revellers flocked to the Clocktower Monument to see in the New Year.

The Clock stikes 12!
Every one cheers, kisses abound! Whoops of joy and shouts of ‘Happy New Year!’

The patroling Policemen had just one more gruelling job to endure - new year kisses from the girls! Must be a terrible job!

News story review:

Butlins Skegness

The article tells us of the controversy of the Adult Weekend held at Butlins Skegness.

The article begings by saying that “Billy Butlin’s famous quote ‘any publicity is good publicity” was never more questionable than this week.” Apparently the tabloids really went to town on the story, describing the male and female strippers as a “nude reveler’s romp”.

The PR man for Butlins hit back by saying that the newspapers exaggerated the event which he described as just harmless fun.

Local church leaders are reported to have slammed the adult event and the Mayor of Skegness, Coun Edith Sutton, hoped people wouldn’t tarnish Skegness with the same brush as Butlins.

The event, according to the Mayor, was hindering the image of the town being a family resort.

“Billy Butlin’s famous quote “any publicity is good publicity” was never more questionable than this week.
Cheap and cheerful national tabloids did a hatchet job on Skegness’s family resort image after Butlin’s Funcoast World opened its doors for their steamiest event ever - “Adult Weekend”.
One tabloids depicted the bawdy bash, which included female strippers “Wet and Wild” and a male version, “The Centurians”, as little more than a “nude reveller’s romp”.
But this week, Butlin’s PR man, Charles Barker, hit back saying “This scurrilous reporting depicts a totally false picture of what actually happened.
“The weekends are harmless entertainment similar to that shown in pubs and clubs all over the country, and does not include lewd public displays, as suggested by the Daily Star.”Attack

The hi-di-hi camp was a prime target for a blistering attack from church officials prior to the event last weekend.
They branded the event as a “sign of a sick society going off the rails”.
The Rev Norman Walker, press secretary for the Skegness Felowship of Christian Churches said it was sad that the sex weekends were taking place in a resort that had built up a good family holiday centre image.
Now the raunchy revellers have returned home with their memories and left some local officials wondering just how they can convince next season’s tourists that Skegness really is a family resort.
Skegness’s Mayor, Coun Edith Sutton said she hoped people would not tarnish the town with the same brush as Butlin’s.
“But East Lindsey’s tourist department is trying to create a family image along the coast.
“I am very sure that most of our visitors would not appreciate this type of entertainment.”

More about Butlins Skegness

News story review:

An excellently written article and very informative. Valuable information for Skegness historical research.

“The sexy Sky Fantasy Channel Bus Tour 98 hit Skegness” begins the article, and continues to tell us how the town’s dignitaries tried to ban the bus from the seafront.

The “sexy raunchy fun and frolics” were staged at The Street nightclub and were declared a resounding success by the organiser of the tour.

“The sexy Sky Fantasy Channel Bus Tour 98 hit Skegness last week - and rode straight into fresh controversy after leaving Blackpool aghast at its antics.
Dignitaries there tried to ban it from the seafront on the grounds of family values. After being threatened with arrest the crew defied the ban and drove on to Skegness
The Mayor of Skegness, Coun Terry Bryan, was equally appalled at the “sexy raunchy fun and frolics” on offer.

Publicity

He said: “I think it’s deplorable that these people use this cheap publicity stunt at the expense of Skegness. Skegness is famous for its family atmosphere, its clean beaches and its wholesome type of entertainment, and at present it is full of young families enjoying the school holidays. And the last thing parents want is this type of so-called entertainment.
“Large companies such as Butlins have invested millions of pounds here, making Skegness one of the country’s premier resorts.
“Skegness depends on tourism for its existence, and cheap gimmicks like this are an insult to the town, its residents and most of all, its visitors.”
But organiser of the tour, Derek Botham declared the visit a resounding success.

Full Monty

“We had a wonderful time. We were inviting people on to the bus and giving away T-shirts, and in the evening our stars were on the stage at The Street inviting members of the public to join them in a strip…and they certainly did. In Skegness they were rather more eager to take their clothes off than they were in Blackpool. We had six guys and girls do the full monty on stage. They brought the house down.”
In fact The Street manager, he said, had invited them back to do a full week’s residency at the nightclub.
Told of the Mayor’s comments Derek declared: “I think he’s behind the times. He ought to get out on to the beach and see what people really want.” ”
