University of the Third Age Cinderella

Written by Angela Gooch on Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 in Clubs.

Skegness Video heard that Skegness was to host the University of the Third Age group so we went along to see what was happening. The venue was the Methodist Church in Skegness.
The University of the Third Age is a group formed by and for senior citizens. They participate in various activities including amateur dramatics, poetry and prose recitals.

When we arrived on scene, the Louth UTA Players were just about to go on stage to perform ‘Cinderella in Five Minutes’
The short play was very amusing.

The compare introduces the act, finishing with arms outstretched to welcome the cast from the wings…nothing happens… the audience is agog!
Tension is broken when the cast march in unexpectedly from a side door in the audience! In the photo above, Prince Charming gives the Good Fairy a ‘helping hand’ onto the stage.

The play is cleverly written, consisting soley of ‘one liners’ and sometimes merely one word. The cast are seated, standing only to deliver their line. The lines were expertly delivered, with expression that conveyed each character’s personality. The overall result was hilarious!

Cinderella’s script consisted mainly of the word ‘alright’, said in many different ways, the final delivery of which caused an uproar as the finale…

…much to the delight of the audience!

Fantasy Island boss, John Woodward, closed The Zoo nightclub following the second ‘rave related’ death of a teenager. He smashed up the nightclub’s sign to signify the closing. His actions were televised at the time.

Fantasy Island boss has closed The Zoo nightclub following the second ‘rave related’ death of a teenager.
Rave attraction owner took a 10 pound sledge hammer to the nightclub sign and declared the club closed following the death of teenager, Jean-Marc Philip Wainwright (17) from Grimsby after attending a rave at the club.
John Woodward said: “The club cannot continue as a dance venue and although the police are quite happy to keep it open until 2am, it will now close.”
He added: “I can’t change the youth culture of today, but what I can change is that it’s not happening on my doorstep.”
Mr Woodward sent his condolences to the family of Jean-Marc. He said: “If I could do anything to bring the lad back I would do it.”
Mr Woodward added: “When we first started Fantasy Island I intended it to be a resort for all ages from 2 to 72, including an element for the teenagers where they could dance in a proper manner.”
Mr Woodward said that increased measures, such as doubling the search team, installing water fountains, using CCTV and co-operating in undercover police operations, had been put into place after the death of York teenager, Danial North who attended The Zoo last year.
He said: “A percentage of the kids found other ways of smuggling drugs into the venue or just took them before going in. There was no way of completely stopping it, unless we carried out a total strip search on everyone.”
He added: “99 per cent of the kids coming here are good kids - it’s just a minority spoiling it for the rest.”
The club will now be converted into either a conference centre, a marine life centre or an educational weather type centre incorporating a children’s ride.
Chief Insp. Brian Manson said: “We are delighted by Mr Woodward’s decision which we think is both sensible and sensitive in the light of the tragic deaths of Daniel North and Jean-Marc Wainwright.

Welcome home ‘Jolly’

Welcome home! There were cheers of joy at the Ex-Servicemen’s Club in Skegness last week when the original copy of London and Eastern Railways’ poster depicting the Jolly Fisherman was officially unveiled. A £1,600 bid, made by the club president, Mr Archie Shaw, brought the poster back to the resort.

Pictured are members of the club during the organisation’s 20s night at which the poster was unwrapped by the president, Mr Herbert Epton, third from right.

Photo of the Jolly Fisherman poster mounted on the wall inside the Skegness Ex-Servicemen’s Club.

The small plate underneath the poster reads “300 folded, 50 rolled”. These words are apparently on the reverse of the photo. I am unsure what they mean! There was no date.

There were concerns for the safety of this poster during the

Unconfirmed reports say that the original poster was indeed rescued.
