Skegness Newspapers
Skegness has been served by several local newspapers over the last couple of centuries.

* The Skegness Herald. first edition 30th June 1882 to 1916
* The Skegness Standard, first edition January 2nd 1922
* The Skegness News, first edition in 1924
* The Skegness Target, free newspaper, first edition in … (to be confirmed)
* The Skegness Citizen, a recently launched free newspaper.

Copies of every edition of the newspapers are kept in the archives at Skegness Library.
The Herald, serving the late 1800s and the early 1900s, is recorded on microfilm.
The other newspapers are stored as hard copies or on microfilm.

We have secured original copies of the Skegness Herald from 1882 to 1901
A study of these is being done separately, links on the right navigation menu.

Historical Newspaper Articles in the Archives

We have compiled a list of old Skegness newspaper articles which we have photographed, from the Skegness Standard and Skegness News. News stories from each decade have been grouped together (links on top navigation menu).
Eventually, all will be included on this Old Local Newspapers website, but until then, it will serve as an index of the old news articles.
All the old local newspaper stories are arranged in chronological order.

New content will be frequently added and updated, photographed newspaper articles constantly uploaded, so keep checking back.
rss feed
Better still, subscribe to out RSS feed to be notified immediately a new story is uploaded.

If you are eager to see a particular story, please email and we will make it a priority.

We will be digging into the old newspaper archives to look at some of the past news stories in Skegness as recorded in the local newspapers.
The articles give us an excellent insight into the real town of Skegness, how it develops as a seaside resort and of course, the people of Skegness.

The images of the old newspapers are quite large files so make take a few moments to download.

The newspaper articles often contain ‘flashbacks’ to perhaps fifty years prior to the date which the article was actually published.
So although the article is dated say 1930, it may report on a story or event which took place many years before.
Please be aware of this when reading the newspaper stories.

Special Features from the Old Newspapers

The old newspapers contain interesting features which are not directly news stories as such.
For example, The Herald published Victorian Poems in several of the issues, occasionally, aerial photos of Skegness were published.
I have grouped these together on dedicated pages.
Similarly, The Herald contained many interesting adverts, and the Standard and Skegness News many local businesses adverts,
including discos and pubs. These also have been included on their own pages.
Though these local businesses have long disappeared, the photos will enlighten us, or remind us of the changing face of Skegness
over the decades.

Ruined Historical Skegness Newspapers -Skegness History is being Destroyed!
Someone needs to do something, and it needs doing fast if the record of our history, our heritage, is to be preserved!
The photos below are of old local newspapers, the Skegness Standard issues in 1932 and the Skegness News issues in 1922. The photographs illustrate the atrocious state that some of our old newspapers are in.
Since Skegness local newspapers were launched in 1882, a copy of each issue has been stored at the Skegness library. Up to just a few months ago, the hard copies were in the public arena in the library. These may be the only copies in existence, or at least accessible to the public.
They are of unpresidented importance, giving an account of the history, in prose and photos, of Skegness as it happened.
The newspapers are being slowly destroyed by stains, rips and tears!
Some have just disintegrated into fragments, and some people have even cut out articles they have taken a fancy to!
Oh, and don’t bother requesting to examine the 1925 Skegness Standard, the whole folio bound year’s issues has disappeared presumed stolen!

The old newspapers have now been removed from the public area, but are still available on request.
Still subject to destruction!

What can be done? Is there an answer?
Well, yes, two answers actually!
Transfer the old newspapers to microfilm or DVD!
Copies of the old local newspapers from some years have already been transferred to microfilm, but this amounts to a mere handful of the 123 years worth of issues. Though this project is ongoing, the process is obviously very slow, too slow. It all comes down to financial availability.
But look at the censuses, they have all been transferred to DVD and copies are selling like hot cakes!
So what’s the second solution?
Ban public access!
What a sad day that would be!
But why do I have this awful feeling that ‘they’ will choose the latter?

Save Our Newspapers!
Have you any views?
