Skeleton at the White House
A Loixlon “Daily Mail” Washington telegram in August 1902 says:
The workmen who are remodelling the White House in America have unearthed under the basement a human skeleton near a stone vault, in the wall of which is an oven.
The terrified workmen thought they had found an ancient tomb, but the character of the masonry indicates that it is the foundation wall of the building previously erected on the site.
The White House and the adjacent buildings rest on land made by filling in.
This may account for the skeleton.
In the famous east room, when the walls were cut for the new iron beams pieces of charred timbers, mementoes of the partial destruction of the mansion by the British in 1814 were found.
