Skegness 1966 Archive Video
Thanks to Barry Robinson of Lite-Bites, Skegness for his help with this article.
The archive video opens with entertainer and organiser, Cyril Catlyn commentating on scenes from the Donkey Derby which appears to be causing much merriment, with the exception of one child who was obviously scared to death!
Cyril is then seen riding his bycycle along South Parade turning into Serena Avenue. The camera cuts to a view of Castleton Boulevard where Cyril can be seen going into his guest house.
The camera follows Cyril’s wife in the kitchen and serving dinner to the guests.
Next we see a shot of Coinsville, a popular attraction on Tower Esplanade the identity of which I have not yet determined, and the hotels on North Parade.
We’re then plunged onto the Dodgems and a kiddies ride in the fun fair before snoozing in deckchairs and other (un)comfortable places in the gardens!
Next we’re at the dress rehearsals of the Landladies Larks, organised by Cyril Catlin.
Back to the amusemant park then off for a ride on the boating lake. A quick walking-snap from a Wrate’s photographer then off to build sandcastles on the beach.
The talent competition rehearsals show a little girl singing ‘Oh, Wouldn’t it be Loveley’ in a broad cockney accent.
A marching band leads the Carnival procession along Lumley Road, with the Lumley Hotel in the background, and a shot of the Carnival Queen – Blackbourn’s shoe shop as a backdrop.
A final shot of the talent competition and a gentle stroll along the Pier brings the very charming video to an end.
