MRS. Mary Ann Dowse, Burgh’s oldest inhabitant, passed away on Coronation Day, in her 96th year. By a coincidence, the town’s oldest inhabitant in 1935 lay dead during the Jubilee celebrations, Mrs. Sarah Ann Simpson having died on the Sunday preceding Monday festivities.

Mrs. Dowse, Lincolnshire to the core, is survived by five sons and one daughter. Her youngest son is 56.

She came of a long-lived family, her father attaining the age of 94, and her mother 90. She was born and married at Holland Fen and came to Burgh in 1891, having, in the meantime, lived at Bicker, Willoughby, High Toynton and Mount Pleasant.

She was a life-long teetotaller, although she had twice lived in public-houses. She could neither read nor write. Her only school was a Sunday school. Digging potatoes at 1s. a day took the place of schooling. She had never visited a cinema, and refused to alter her clock for Summer Time.
