Council Tells Butlin to Remove Giant Wheel
CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN COUNCIL AND BUTLINS
STATEMENT BY TOWN CLERK
THE ” Giant Wheel ” which has been erected in the Butlin Amusement Park on the Skegness seashore in front of the Grand Parade looks like leading to some considerable controversy in the Council.
At the March meeting of the Council’s foreshore Committee, the Clerk (Mr. I. M. Cule) informed the committee that, on February 26th, his attention was called to the fact that Messrs. Butlin Ltd., were erecting a Giant Wheel in the Central Amusement Park, which would be more than 14 feet above the level of the Parades.
A letter was dispatched to Messrs Butlin immediately, drawing their attention to the fact that the erection was a breach of the covenant contained in the conveyance of the seashore, and also a breach of their licence.
Despite that letter, and a further letter reiterating that before a structure of that height could be erected, it was necessary to have the consent of the Council, the Ministry of Transport and the Earl of Scarbrough, the construction of the Giant Wheel had been completed.
THE WRONG SITE ?
A letter from the Park manager stated that it was hoped the council would raise no objection to the structure.
the committee’s attention was also called to the alleged unsatisfactory appearance of the northern wall of the Amusement Park.
The Council were recommended to inform Messrs. Butlin that they were not prepared to agree to the Giant Wheel being sited in the Amusement Park and that, as it has been been erected in contravention of their licence to occupy this site, it must be removed.
Further that they be asked to re-decorate the northern wall of the Park so as to put the same in “an attractive condition” as stated in the licence.
