Black or White Marble Tombstones Spoil Churchyard

TOMBSTONE PROBLEM
SKEGNESS RECTOR’S COMMENTS

Writing in the current issue of the Skegness Church Review the Rector, (the Rev. G. R. Sansbury) comments:
Some months ago I reminded you of  “a new threat to our churchyards,” as it has been described by an authority, namely  black tombstones.

Expert opinion in the church has warned us against this type of memorial as also is white marble.

The purpose of a memorial is to mark reverently the place of burial and to give the name of the departed and other particulars.
Staring white or black makes a grave more prominent than others and is in complete contrast to the quiet beauty of our English churchyards. But, unfortunately, some people do not realise this and even promise them to their relations before they die.
The Rector of a parish is the person responsible for the maintenance of good standards in the churchyards and he is placed in a very difficult position by requests of this sort. Let us do all we can to keep our memorials as simple and as good as possible.
