Skegness Lads WW1 Recruits Send-off

THE SEND-OFF
Since last night, we understand, six further recruits were obtained and the batch of 58 were accorded an enthusiastic send-off for Lincoln this (Wednesday) by the 1.25 train.

Preceded by the local bugle bands, members of the East Yorks. Cyclist Corps, etc., the recruits marched from the Clock Tower to the railway station to the accompaniment of cheers and congratulatory messages from the vast crowds en route.

Capt. Weigall, Rev. William Disney, Father Parle, Coun. Geo. F. Ball, and many prominent local ladies and gentlemen joined in the procession, and volumes of cheers were raised and fog-signals were fired as the train steamed out of the station.
Before leaving, Coun. Ball presented each recruit with a packet containing cigarettes, cigarette case, holder, etc., and a card conveying his own and the people of Skegness’s best wishes for their health success, and a speedy return.
Such was the send-off, but the return welcome will eclipse it by miles!

That it may come to pass before any of our Skegness lads are called upon to face the crucial issue for which they have so gallantly enlisted is a prayer that will find an echo in the heart of every person who reads these lines.
The sum of £5 was collected for the Skegness branch of the Prince of Wales’s National Relief Fund at the send-off.

Do YOU know if any of these cigarette cases presented to the volunteers have survived to the present day?
