Keystone Cops-style Chase After Runaway Horse
A RUNAWAY horse led to a Keystone Cops-style chase along busy holiday beaches and roads.
Two coastguard vehicles, two police cars, two runners, a Landrover and a burger van pursued Megan Moor when she galloped along Skegness beach.
Lisa Jackson took Megan paddling near North Shore Road. The mare, a successful endurance eventer, had suffered leg concussion and it was felt the water would ease the injury.
Mrs Jackson, from Drummond Road, Skegness, said: “A wave came up she decided she didn’t like. She barged into me and I went head first up to my waist into the sea. Then she galloped off.”
A drenched Lisa and friend Lorna Hendley chased Megan northwards along the beach and promenade.
When the women reached Butlins they hitched a lift from a burger van.
Skegness coastguards saw Megan galloping by and set off after her. Chapel St Leopards coastguards joined the chase.
Mrs Jackson’s other companion, Marie Chapman, followed the Skegness coastguard vehicle in her Landrover along the promenade to Anchor Lane, Ingoldmells, where she met a police car.
Sirens blaring and lights flashing, the car set off, with the Landrover close behind. They dashed along coast roads, often against the traffic flow.
At Mumby the police driver stopped, contacted another police vehicle, and announced: “The animal has been detained at Mogg’s Eye”. That was nearly ten miles from where Megan broke loose.
The Chapel coastguard vehicle had ‘nudged’ her into the sea to stop her. Then she was tethered to the vehicle.
A grateful Mrs Jackson was relieved Megan was safe: “She just lost a shoe and had a couple of superficial scratches.”
She added: “They acted so promptly. They were really very good and they saw the funny side.”
Skegness coastguard Alan Fisher said: “It makes a change from air beds and missing kids”
The coastguards were so impressed with Megan’s turn of speed they nicknamed her Red Rum. Mr Fisher quipped: “If they want to put it in the Grand National next year I will back it!”
