It is with sincere regret that we this week chronicle the death of Mr George Morley, of Algitha House, Skegness, which occurred at his residence shortly after noon on Friday last.
Whilst the news was heard with gereral regret it did not come as a great surprise to the majority of people, it being well known that Mr Morley’s health had been very precarious of late. He was born in Picker in 1938, being thus 78 years of age.
Through the passing of Mr Morley another “old standard” and one of the erstwhile most familiar figures in our resort is removed. Since 1882 – a period of 34 years – he carried on the business of a chemist and druggist in Lumley Road, and he was one of the oldest and most respected tradesman in our town. He also acted for several years as the local agent for Messers Sutton and Co, the well-known cartage agents.
Before coming to Skegness he resided at Wainfleet and previous to that at Donnington. His career was both varied and interesting, and in addition to chemistry he for some time followed the printing profession, his knowledge of the trade proving him to be a skilled craftsman. In his chosen profession he was also
highly competent, and although he religiously adhered to several of the remedies that are described in this 20th century as “old fashioned”, his advice and remedies were much sought after, and many people greatly regretted his forced retirement from business.
Since his retirement, about three and a half years ago, the deceased gentleman suffered from an affliction which rendered him practically helpless, and although he was able to be wheeled out a little in a bath chair during the fine weather, his affliction was of such a nature that there were no hopes of his ultimate recovery.
Throughout this long and trying period, Mrs Morley nursed her husband with a care and devotion that won the admiration of all who knew her.
The sympathy of the whole town goes out to Mrs Morley in her bereavement.
George Morley made and sold the famous Skegness Victorian Perfume (the link also shows Morley’s first shop which was situated on High Street, Skegness).
