Poll Tax Protest March
SOME 300 people took part in a Poll Tax protest march through Skegness in March of 1990.
The police presence was small and low key, and there was no trouble whatsoever.
The parade, chanting and waving banners, marched from the Railway Station, via Berry Way and Lumley Road, to the Embassy Centre, where the East Midlands Labour Party was holding its conference over the weekend.
Townspeople and delegates took part in the march and were joined by shoppers along the route.
MP Tony Benn, who was also involved in the parade, made a speech outside the Embassy, denouncing the poll tax, and predicting that it would be the downfall of the Conservative Party.
The protest march was organised by Lisa Feeley of Skegness, who was secretary of the East Lindsey Labour Party.
