The First Telegram From Skegness
Speaking at the annual outing of Messers Kilmister and Co’s employees, at Skegness in 1921, the ex-Mayor of Lincoln, Ald. H A Cottingham, mentioned that twelve years ago (in 1909) a former Mayor of Lincoln, named William Cottingham, spent a day at Skegness with the boys of the Lincoln Old Blue Coat School, and he, the speaker, had the honour of receiving the very first telegram despatched from Skegness – a telegram which he still posessed (at the time of printing in 1921) – notifying the arrival of the party, and predicting that Skegness would in time become the Scarborough of Lincolnshire.
