Skegness Joins Nottingham's 2018 World Cup Bid

SKEGNESS could be part of World Cup Fever in 2018 because it has joined Nottingham’s bid to be a host city. Nottingham is keen to expand its bid to incorporate the wider region, and representatives from the Football Asssociation visited the town on Monday to see what it has to offer.

If successful, it could mean sporting events will be held in the town during the run up to the main event, and it could be a Fan Fest site for showing the games and associated events live on big screens on the beach and in our open spaces.

Nottingham is one of 16 cities across the country bidding to be part of England’s proposal to host one of the biggest sporting events in the world.

Leader of East Lindsey District Council Coun Doreen Stephenson said: “We are keen to support Nottingham City Council in moving their bid forward.

“We’re working hard to regenerate our coast and provide new and innovative activities for people to enjoy.

“To be associated with this bid can only be a benefit to our coast.”

Coun George Saxon, Chris Baron and ELDC Communications Officer, James Gilbert took representitives from the FA on a tour around Skegness recently. James Gilbert then went to Nottingham to a debrief, and the FA was reported as saying that Skegness was a real highlight for them and they were really impressed.

The idea behind Skegness supporting Nottingham’s bid is that a lot of people from that area generally holiday in Skegness. Trends show that during the World Cup, many people wait to see when England are playing before booking their trip away/holidays. Bringing live matches to the beach would mean people wouldn’t have to wait because they will know they can enjoy the football matches in a more impressive environment on the beach. This will hopefully encourage more people to holiday in Skegness.
