Wartime Evacuees Anniversary Reunion in Skegness

A 70th anniversary reunion of former wartime evacuees from Grimsby to Skegness took place in the Tower Gardens in Skegness during the afternoon of Tuesday, lst September, 2009.

The Mayor of Skegness, Coun Pat Phillips attended the event.

Most of the former evacuees travelled to Skegness by coach, accompanied by Mrs Janet Layton (nee Stephenson), who has written a series of articles for the Bygones section of the Grimsby Telegraph to coincide with the event.

An organiser of the event, and former Skegness News reporter, Peter Hopper sent us the picture below of the wartime child evacuees gathered in Tower Gardens, Skegness at the outbreak of the war. Peter has also written an article for us about his experiences as one such evacuee:
