Westgate Building Work

When will this eyesore be removed?

Because Skegness is a seaside resort which relies on holiday trade, many people have expressed concern about the scaffolding, netting and hoarding which were erected over the frontage of the Westgate store on Lumley Road Skegness three weeks before Easter, creating a less-than-attractive sight in one of the prime positions of the town. With the end of June now approaching and nothing appearing to be happening with the site, we contacted Westgate, part of Anglia Regional Co-operative Society, to express our concern.

The store manager cordially replied, assuring us that the timing of the renovation work was unavoidable. We are also assured that the work is being completed as quickly as possible.

It appears that after inspection from a structural engineer initially in March, there was no alternative but to make the front part of the building safe, and scaffolding had to be erected to do this. Investigations and planning could then begin on how to rectify a very serious problem to the building, and although it appears little work is being done this is apparently quite the opposite.

The manager of the Skegness store  assures us that they are trying to do everything possible to complete this as soon as possible for them as a business, for the appearance of the town centre and customers saying “Anglia Co-Operative Society are committed to see the works completed as fast as possible and also putting a huge investment into the building to continue trading as Westgate in the town.”

Our photograph was taken when the scaffolding was erected at the Skegness Westgate store prior to Easter, 2009.
