Nostalgic Memories of Skegness Shops

Mrs P M Appleyard, formerly of 30 George Street Skegness recalled:

“As a young shop assistant at Duttons, later became Liptons Supermarket, I watched with excitement across the [Lumley] road as Crofts the ironmongers was being taken over by Boots the Chemist.
“Later when the news got around we were to have a ‘Woolworths Store’ the town was buzzing with activity.
“Our shop hours were from 8am to 7pm, Friday 8pm and Saturday 9pm. We had outside stalls to catch the thousands of evening trippers buying presents. A lot stamped with a present from Skegness.
“But one good thing Duttons always laid on was a lovely supper for all the assistants on Saturday evening. The hours of opening and closing are much better these days.
“Oh! and wages, but we were happy in out work, and I still think the old happy shopping atmosphere beats all the rush and tear of today’s supermarkets.
“So much for progress, but it is nice to daydream of yesteryear.”
