Human Skull Unearthed in Hotel Yard

A human skull was unearthed during excavations in the White Hart Hotel at Burgh le Marsh in 1926.
Workmen were laying down new drains on the premises when they came across the human skull which was fairly well preserved.
The discovery was made as they had dug away about a foot of earth.

Alongside the skull were various other bones which were later declared to be not human.

It was conjected that the skull and bones had probably been placed there many years before, and may even have been reburied after similar, previous excavations.
As the White Hart Hotel is directly opposite the Burgh churchyard, it is possible that the burial ground, many years previously, had extended to the site later occupied by the hotel.
The District Coroner was informed of the discovery but after examination of the bones, he did not think an inquest was necessary.
We are unclear as to the eventual fate of the scull and bones.
