Empty-Headed Girls

“Empty-Headed Girls”
Condemnation by Skegness College Headmistress

A thought-provoking article appeared in a 1928 issue of “The Factorient”, the magazine of the Orient Girls’ College, Skegness.
Headmistress of the college, Miss Nimmo LLA, wrote:
“Let us look for a moment at … that army of empty-headed, shallow-hearted girls seen everywhere now-a-days in our towns and seaside resorts, whose minds are occupied entirely with thoughts of dress, of dancing, smoking, unwholesome cinema pictures and other so-called pleasures.
“This is the result of the lack of higher education, of high ideals, of value set upon worthy things, and the remedy must be more and better education.
“Education, even if not required for a certain calling in life, is surely never wasted. It is a priceless possession necessary to the fullest pleasure and happiness; to the opening of the eyes that they may see, and to the unstopping of the ears that they may hear, to the storing of the minds that they may know, and to the preparing of the souls that they may understand wisdom.”
