Dog Shot as it Guards Dying Man
A snarling alsation dog was shot dead by a police officer in Skegness when it prevented ambulance men from helping its dying master in June, 1976.
Retired licensee Mr Andy Kane (pictured right) had just walked his eight-year-old pet dog, Rex, on the grass outside him home at 57 Lancaster Avenue, Skegness, when Mr Kane (59) suddenly collapsed and fell to the ground. Rex kept guard of his master, snarling at passers-by who tried to help.
The police and ambulance were called but still Rex kept his vigil. Mr Kane’s wife, Doris, who had looked after Rex from being a puppy, also tried to call the dog off without success.
Eventually, in a desperate bid to save her husband, Mrs Kane agreed to the dog being destroyed.
A police officer shot the dog dead.
Mr Kane was put into a waiting ambulance and conveyed to hospital where he was pronaounced dead on arrival.
