Bottle Explosion Maims Nottingam Poor Boy

Mystery surrounded a serious mishap to a 10 year old boy staying at the Nottingham Poor Boys home on Roseberry Avenue, Skegness, which occured in the summer of 1931.

A party of boys from the holiday home were walking on the beach at Gibraltar Point, under the supervision of one of the officers, when Frank Buckland espied a beer bottle half full of liquid, lying on the beach.
With boy-like curiosity he picked up the bottle and began to uncork it when it exploded with a loud detonation which was heard some distance away.

Shards of glass entered the boy’s eyes and he was rushed to Nottingham General Hospital, on the orders of Dr O’Neil who was immediately summoned to the scene.

An operation was performed in a bid to save the boy’s sight in one eye, the loss of sight in the other eye was declared certain.
