Baby Duck Stranded in Waterway Algae

june_2009-036A  baby duckling was causing much concern to passers-by today as it was stranded in the thick algae in the waterway in Skegness.

The little fellow was all alone and looking very forlorn as onlookers tried to throw stones into the waterway, at the rear of the Pier Field, to break up the algae bloom.  A pair of adult ducks, possibly the parents of the stranded youngster, were swimming nearby and seemed to be calling out to the duckling.

One woman approached a nearby ELDC car park attendant to report the dilema but the attendant said there was nothing he could do.

Another young couple went off to seek help from Skegness Natureland.

All’s well that ended well, though, because when we passed the scene half an hour later, the little duckling had been freed and was swimming happily, and no doubt thankfully, away!

  1. I am pleased to hear that it all ended well. However I am not pleased to hear about the ELDC car park mans disinterest as it was only very recently as they sounded from the rooftops how much more helpful they were going to be and assist visitors in any way possible. Whilst he was perhaps not equipped to perform a water rescue, but more intent on persecuting visiting motorists with his plastic target driven ticket machine,he could have at least have assisted in some way by contacting the RSPCA or Natureland (via his equally plastic walkie talkie)or directed the people to said Natureland.

Its a wonder he didnt give the duckling a ticket for loitering in one place too long.Suggestion spend some of the ill gotten gains from said parking attendants on

A)sending them on a customer care course.
B)A common sense “Im not thick course”
c)Getting that filthy water and the algae cleared up.

If some poor mollycoddled 21st century kid fell in and ruined its designer clothes they would soon do something about it.
