Skegness Clock Tower War Damage

clock_tower_skegnessTowards the end of 1940, the Skegness Clock Tower sustained damage due to enemy action, and it was at first feared that the well-known landmark would have to be dismantled.
Fortunately, the damage was not as bad as first thought and in February of 1941, the Surveyor to the Council was given the go ahead to repair the structure.
Both the Surveyor and Mr Frank Jefferies, a local jeweller who was contracted to the winding of the clock and keeping it in good repair, were of the opinion that the clock itself was only very slightly damaged.
But because the glass clockface was shattered, the elements were affecting the mechanism.
The Council ordered the Surveyor to proceed with the repairs without delay.
