Tower Cinema Building Objections

1920

The following letter was received by the Secretary of the National Federation of Building Trades Operations:
Gentlemen,
At a general meeting of the above held on Thurday 25th March, 1920, the following resolution was unanimously passed for your information: “That we, the members of the Building Trades Federation, object to the new building being erected for Mr Clements on the site in the Pleasure Gardens, and that we as workers claim (at this stage in our National affairs) that buildings on this description should not be allowed to proceed with as they were not essential, when labour and materials were wanted for houses in Skegness for which the demand is so great.”
Yours faithfully
W Chambers

Coun George Ball argued that the tenders for construction of the theatre had already been published and that a Wainfleet firm had secured the contract. It was not fair to the operatives to try and stop the building, because the housing scheme would not be delayed at all because of the fact that Mr Fred Clements was building a picture house.
