Skegness' First Council House Baby

An account of the first baby to be born on the first Council Housing Estate in Skegness, which was, of course, the Tennyson Green Housing Estate, built in 1920/21.

Councillors suggested that the baby should be called “Richard” after Richmond Drive in Skegness.

We did a little family history research and found the original birth entry for “Little Richard” , it seems that he was acually named William L R Goy and the mother’s maiden name was Kerry.  William would be 88 years old if he’s still living today. Do YOU know anything more about Skegness’ first council house baby?

Consulting the Skegness Street Guide 1928 we can see that the Goy Family lived at number 29 Richmond Drive, Skegness.

Here’s the original story…

“Our” First Baby

At the Council meeting in committee last Monday, the announcement was made that a baby had been born on the Housing Site.
The Council as a whole were elated, and anxious to give a present to the little one.

Mr and Mrs Goy, the parents, have assented their willingness to name the child Richard after Richmond Drive, a name suggested by the Councillors.

One Response to “ Skegness' First Council House Baby ”

  1. William L R Goy married Hetty Carrott in the September quarter of 1947, Spilsby district (which includes Skegness)
I found two possible births for children, William H J Goy, September quarter of 1949, and Angela E Goy September quarter of 1956, both also in Spilsby district.
