Domestic Violence – it's the wife's fault!

Magistrate and Wife Beating
Rough on the Woman

“When a man knocks his wife about, it is invariably the wife’s fault,” said Mr Symons, the Clerkenwell magistrate, on Saturday, in a wife’s application for a separation order on the ground of her husband’s cruelty.

“A man,” he declared, “is no longer master in his own house. A woman promises to love, honour and obey, but obedience cannot be enforced. Under the good old law a man could thrash his wife so long as the stick was no thicker than his thumb. Now the law is wobbly and weak-kneed, and we have instead these miserable maintenance orders, and there is no domestic happiness.”
