"Skegness is Unsafe"

Those Rumours
Coun S Moody said persistent rumours were being circulated to the effect that all Skegness inhabitants had received orders to leave the coast and proceed inland. Only that afternoon a telephone message had come through asking if the family of one of their Councillors was safe.
Last summer they enjoyed a good August because Coun Ball took steps to advertise in the picture houses of the Midland towns and cities the fact that Skegness was quite safe, and that visitors would be welcomed. He thought that some step should be taken to contradict these false rumours and that the fact be made known that Skegness had never been so secure. Otherwise he feared the coming season.
Coun Holmes advocated no action. The best thing was to let the rumours die naturally. Contradictions kept them alive.
Ultimately it was decided to write to the various authorities in the Midland towns.
