Efforts to Win a Captured German Gun
The Gun’s Week
Can Skegness Secure a 9.2 Howitzer
A Gun Week will be held in Skegness, commencing Monday October 21st, and if the town can raise £5 per head of its population during the week they will be presented with a suitably engraved 15in shell. But the Central Adjudication are hoping for bigger efforts and want Skegness to win a 9.2 Howitzer during the year October 1st, 1918, to June 30th 1919.
Skegness has sent a large number of men and also an enormous amount of money, and if previous investors will continue to reinvest their interest it is quite probable a tank might be presented. It will be a big stunt, but they are sometimes available, and if a tank or Howitzer were secured it would be a suitable monument to place in the Marine Gardens for future generations to look at.

It appears that, jumping forward in time, Skegness did in fact acquire a ‘Captured German Gun’, but, alas, it was to become a ‘hot potato’ in the 1920s when no one wanted it in their ‘back garden’!
