Sunshine Paddling Pool Redevelopment
Skegness Town Council granted lease for former paddling pool site.
New Children’s Play Ground Sunshine Corner
SKEGNESS Town Council has been given a clear path by East Lindsey District Council to develop a children’s play area on the former Sunshine Paddling Pool at the heart of the resort’s northern foreshore.
The District Council’s Executive Board agreed to grant the Town Council a long term lease at its meeting on January 13, 2009.
The Mayor of Skegness, Councillor Neil Pimperton, said: “The Town Council is keen to develop a first class play area in this part of town and this decision means we can now press ahead. It is important that the town provides an exciting range of high quality facilities that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.”
Portfolio Holder for Business Support at the District Council, Councillor Colin Davie, said: “I am delighted to have been able to support the town in its bid to improve this area. The paddling pool has been unused for six years and the play area will be a welcome attraction for young people. Once up and running I’m sure it will be well used.”
A look back on the history of Sunshine Corner

Talks are expected on the future of Sunshine Corner in Skegness.
The former children’s paddling pool is presently under the control of East Lindsey District Council.
Skegness Town Council will be consulting the public in March of this year to collect their views. The town council are looking at the possibility of developing the former paddling pool into a children’s play area
More details will follow as soon as possible.
The Sunshine Paddling Pool was a feature built on the Northern Foreshore of Skegness, in the shape of the word ‘SUNSHINE’. (You can see the old fountain to the right of the photo)
Many of the projects on the foreshore including the Fairy Dell, Sunshine paddling pool, Outdoor Pool, Boating Lake, Waterway and Embassy Theatre were pioneered by Mr Roland Jenkins who worked for the then Skegness Urban District Council.
The paddling pool was closed for health and safety reasons some time ago, along with the Fairy Dell.
Whilst its future was still in debate, it has been developed as a garden feature.

What we say:
It would be nice to see the paddling pool restored to its former use. However, this would cost an enormous amount due to modern day health and safety standards, and would therefore be impractical.
The main feature of the design is the word ’sunshine’ in writing and underlined, along with ’sun rays’ formed by coloured paving. We think it is imperative that this design is maintained and incorporated into the redevelopment to aford the continuity of Skegness history.

The fountain, seen on the right of the photo below is not particularly ornamental like the one in the Fairy Dell, but it has been in place at Sunshine Corner for over fifty years so it would be nice if it could also be incorperated into the redevelopment.

I’m very sad to see the sunshine paddling pool in its current state, as a child I had many happy days there, and I personally believe that the council should have just renevated what already exists, rather than totally replace it with what is a good idea, but one that I don’t agree with. On a hot sunny day, which everytime I have visited from Stoke-on-Trent it has been sunny, where would the kids more likely want to play? a cool, refreshing paddling pool or run around all hot and bothered in a play area, moaning about how someone has taken their swing, whereas a swimming pool can be shared by all.
I have read lower down the main article and it says that renevating it would cost more money and would be inpratical, well I disagree with that also. renevating it would possibly be alot cheaper than spending the money on the parts for the park, the builders, labour, materials, etc, etc. And not only that, but health and safety? all I have to say is, if the fairy dell pool can be sorted out, so can the sunshine.
I was devastated,to see the sunshine paddling pool is no longer open, and in a very bad way.i have so many memories as a child on holiday at the pool, theres lots of parks in skegness, why build another? bring back the paddling pool!!!!skegness is not the same with out it… ;-(
I have been to skegness every year since the day I was born and continue do do so now at the age of 30 with my own children looking back on the article I feel saddened that like the fairy dell the sunshine which I feel was a more popular pool to the fairy dell has not been restored one of the many things I associate with skegness is the sunshine along with the jolly fisherman and the suncastle and also kiddies corner where myself and my children have enjoyed many a happy time I shed a tear at the pictures of it has a garden feature has when I have seen it myself it doesn’t look right it should be a paddling pool and was devestated when I saw the pictures of it being demolished I think I and many others would have prefered it remain a garden feature if not in use I agree with the other posts bring it back it’s not skegness without it it’s part of it’s history
