RAF Bomb Disposal Expert Iraq
Interview with RAF Bomb Disposal Expert who served in Iraq
The Royal Air Force Bomb Disposal Unit was giving mine detecting demonstrations at Church Farm Museum, Skegness today.
Interviewer Paul Gooch asked one of the Bomb Disposal Experts about his recent work in Iraq.
The soldier said that he was posted to Iraq in September of last year and returned his base at RAF Coningsby in January 2006.
He told us that there were lots of explosives in Iraq which needed disposing of, and they worked closely with the army and other RAF personell. The team was kept quite busy disarming bombs.
The soldier recalled that a 500lb American Mark 82 bomb was found at the rear of a police station and it was the Bomb Disposal Unit’s job to disarm it. They transported the bomb to a safe area and blew the fuse pocket. “It made a nice big crack”, the soldier told us.
