Gas from Tar Experiment

GAS FROM TAR
NOVEL EXPERIMENT AT SKEGNESS

Thanks to the ingenuity and ability of Mr C J P Wadman Smith, the Skegness Gas Company’s manager, the town has been supplied with gas of a standards sufficient to meet ordinary requirements.

It is over six weeks ago since the Gas Co received a supply of coal, the single exception being the purchase of a couple of trucks from Mr Kipping as recorded in our last issue. Mr Wadman Smith fortunately was able to devise a method of obtaining gas from tar instead of coal, and although only equivalent to a 15 candle power illuminant, it has served Skegness in good stead. Without such an apparatus devised by Mr Wadman Smith it is safe to say the town would I have been in total darkness last week, Friday night, perhaps the worst night for illuminating power, as the pressure was kept as low as possible.

On the Pier for instance, night-lights were utilised to assist the pianist.

On Saturday evening Mr Smith felt he could afford to be more generous with the pressure, consequent upon a termination of the strike being announced, and the result was a great improvement which was appreciated alike by shop keepers and householders, Mr Wadman Smith is to be congratulated upon his successful efforts to provide gas during a very difficult period.
