Revelations at Coroner’s Inquest

Police Proceedings Probable

That the Spilsby district police had discovered the body of a newly born male child buried in a garden at the village of Stickney, as a result of gossip and rumour rife in the village, was brought to light on Monday, when at Spilsby Sessions House the Skegness area Coroner, Mr. W. C. Howard opened an inquest.
During the proceedings the name of the alleged mother of the child was stated, but was suppressed at the request of the Coroner in view of probable proceedings in another court.
P. C. Crunkhorn informed the Coroner that, as a result of certain gossip circulating in the village of Stickney concerning a girl, named, he made due enquiries and later informed P.S. Parker, of Spilsby, of the rumour on Wednesday, January 8th. Later the same day, in company with the Sergeant, he made further enquiries and interviewed a number of people. He continued his interviews and enquiries also on the next day.

COMMENCED DIGGING OPERATIONS
He visited a house in the village on the Friday, the home of the girl named, and following certain instructions received from Serg Parker, accompanied him to a piece of arable land at the rear of the house. They commenced digging operations at 1.30 p.m. and recovered the body of a fully developed male.
It had been buried about 2 feet deep and was wrapped in some pieces of cloth. It was conveyed
to Spilsby Police station.

On Saturday in company with P.C. Owen, of New Leake, he made a survey of the premises and prepared the plan now produced.
At this point, the Coroner said that concluded the evidence which he proposed to take that in view of probable proceedings the inquest would be adjourned to await the result of proceedings.

And the inquest was accordingly adjourned.
