The Skegness Herald tells of the reaction of the people of Skegness to Queen Victoria’s death at the beginning of 1901.

As was the norm when reporting the death of an important person, the whole issue of the newspaper was printed with black borders.

The Queen’s Coronation and Marriage
Our townsman, Mr W Johnson, is now exhibiting in his shop window, near the Post Office, some unique specimens of the ‘Sun’ newspaper.
One is of the date June 28th 1838, and is printed in gilt letters, and contains a medallion of the Queen and an account of her Coronation.
Another of the date of February 10th, 1840, and contains two beautiful medallion portraits of the Queen and Prince Albert and an account of their marriage.
A third, and more unique still, is a page of “The true-born Irishman” dated March 3rd 1804, containing the National Anthem for George III and some verses on the French Revolution.

Shops in Skegness closed their doors in respect for the late Queen.
