Pond Blamed for Fatal Infectious Diseases
Source: Skegness Herald 1902
Complaints about the stagnant pond off Wainfleet Road, Skegness are received and discussed by Skegness Urban District Council.
THE POND IN WAINFLEET ROAD
The following letter was read from Mr. J.F.Kiss, solicitor respecting the pond in Wainfleet
Road:-
12th October, 1902.
Walter Stow, of Wainfleet Road. Skegness, has instructed me to write to your Council calling attention to the nuisance that arises from the pond on Wainfleet Road almost opposite to Alexandra Road, and in the immediate vicinity of his house.
He informs me that the stench from it at times is most noxious and offensive; and it is injurious to health, which assertion is proved by the fact that nearly all the infectious cases (several of which have terminated fatally) have arisen in that immediate neighbourhood.
My client wishes me to ask you if your Council cannot take steps to have the nuisance abated in some manner, as at the present time the pond is a common cesspool to receive the refuse of the neighbourhood, and I am sure unless it is filled in will cause another infectious outbreak, and will not only cause the town expense but also damage.
I am, Sir, Your obedient Servant, Frederick Kiss
Reply from the Council:
To the Chairman of the Skegness Urban District Council.
Mr. Dutton pointed out that a great nuisance existed in the Wainfleet Road , and that it was of the utmost importance that the pit was filled. It was being filled in very slowly.
