Jolly Fisherman Letter Seals

The Jolly Fisherman Seals

Following the paragraph in our columns last week, pointing out that the Advancement Association had secured a quantity of Jolly Fisherman Seals, and asking householders and tradesmen to obtain them free of charge, and place them on all correspondence, nearly 10,000 have been issued to applicants.

It is hoped that all householders will help the association in their endeavour to make Skegness and its bracing air a household word throughout the country.

It’s taken some time but I have been fortunate enough to secure what I believe is an example of  the Jolly Fisherman letter seals supplied by the Skegness Advancement Association, documented above.

The photograph below shows a Jolly Fisherman letter seal which measures around 2in across. The reverse has remnents of an envelope attached and also a stamp hinge. The presence of the stamp hinge re-enforces my belief that this is one of the original seals. Also, in a 1920s Skegness holiday guide published by the Skegness Urban District Council, there is a drawing of what is believed to be the letter seal, concurring with the period of the news story.
