Jolly Fisherman Lace
To commemorate Skegness Centenary, Stiebel and Co Ltd have manufactured a limited edition in lace reproductions of the original Jolly Fisherman poster.
Five hundred are to be on sale, and they are expected to fetch at least £2 each. Ten were sold even before they were made for £5 each.
Profit will be donated to the Rotary Club’s Jubilee House, which they recently bought and furnished so that needy people can holiday in Skegness.
The designer is Skegness draughtsman Mr Terry Rippon.
A sample of the lace is hung in the Mayor’s Parlour, at Skegness Town Hall, but the photograph below is the sample in our own personal collection of Skegness Memorabilia.
STIEBALS.i did work there for a short time back in the 60s as a knitter,a few mates work there too,john crookes,john overton,stuwert luwellyn,rob woodward and others,it was a boring job tending and watching about 12 automatic knitting machines down an isle for any thing going wrong to the nylon curtains as it knitted row after row at quite a speed ,i used to like tying the cones on the back of the machine just to break the boredom there was no windows to look out of and couldnt smoke lol,but the pay wasnt bad for skegness.john crooks had a barn owl and used to bring it to work and perched it on the radiator at the end of his isle it just sat there with one i closed and the other looking at everything going on then open the closed eye if it was startled which used to amuse me.but as the demand for lace curtains slowed they closed the factory down after many years to keep their parent company going at nottingham.
I’ve just come accross 10 of theses laces from Stiebals – all still in the original wrapping. I’m going to stick them on ebay.
