DH Lawrence stayed in Skegness Hotel
The English poet and writer, D H Lawrence, whose famous novels include Lady Chatterley’s Lover and Women in Love, often stayed at the Woodthorpe Hotel 64 South Parade, Skegness.
The hotel was owned, at that time, by Lawrence’s aunt, Ellen Staynes and Nottingham born Lawrence, who suffered with pneumonia often visited her to convalesce.
Mrs Staynes can be found on the 1901 census in the Woodthorpe Hotel.
The Woodthorpe Hotel bears a plaque beside the entrance door:
“In this house the Novelist and Poet D H Lawrence (1885-1930) convalesced when he was sixteen years of age. The house was, at that time, a guest house owned by his aunt, Mrs Ellen Staynes”.
