Death of the Countess of Scarbrough
Skegness extends sincere condolences to the Earl of Scarbrough in the death of his wife, the Countess of Scarbrough. who died on Thursday night at 8.50 at her Yorkshire home, Sandbeck Park, Rotherham.
It was only yesterday week that Skegness people, assembled for the opening ceremony of the Cottage Hospital extension, learned of the serious illness of her ladyship.
The Countess had promised to perform the ceremony in connection with the institution, which she opened 18 years previously, but septic pneumonia had developed on a chill which she contracted while attending the races at Doncaster, and it was while the ceremony was in progress that her illness took a very grave turn and gave rise to such anxiety that several eminent physicians were called in.
Medical skill was, however, of no avail and she passed away an Thursday night as stated.
While the Countess was not such a familiar figure to Skegness as her husband, the Earl, she paid periodical visits to the resort.
She was married to the Earl in 1899, and in August 11th of that year she performed the opening ceremony in connection with Skegness’s well-known landmark – the Clock Tower.
As already stated, the Countess opened the Cottage hospital 18 years ago.
About two years ago she and the Earl inspected the several amenities and developments of Skegness.
The photograph was taken in Butlins Amusement Park, where the couple were greatly interested in the various sights and scenes and the Countess commented upon the beds of beautiful flowers and the attractive lay-out of the park.
