Ball Point Pens Taboo

An interesting article which reflects 1950s attitudes. The ‘modern’ ball point pens were forbidden in selection examinations by East Lindsey Committee.
Lindsey decision will vex juniors Lindsey Education Committee on Friday, decided to forbid the use of ball pointed pens in the selection examination at schools in the county.
It was stated that at a meeting of the Secondary Schools Selection Advisory Committee the chief examiner said that so far as he was aware no script markers had raised any criticism in connection with the use of ball pointed pens at the selection examination, but he considered that their use was to be deprecated, and members of the committee agreed in this view.
