Accident to Council Worker

It’s obvious that methane gas was not discovered in 1901, as this newspaper article gives account of a Council worker exploring a sewage manhole in Skegness with a naked flame.

Accident to Council Worker

While examining a manhole near the sewage works with a lighted candle on Thursday night last an explosion occurred and one of the Council’s men engaged was burnt about the face and head.
Fortunately the injuries were not of a serious nature.
