Under Rule of Five Sovereigns
LOCAL RESIDENTS WHO HAVE LIVED UNDER THE RULE OF FIVE SOVEREIGNS
It may hardly seem credible that there are at the present time many old people residing in Skegness who have lived under the rule of five sovereigns; and that, in spite of the fact that one of them (Queen Victoria) reigned sixty-three-and-a-half years.
King George; III died on the 20th January, 1820, so that all who have reached the age of 82 years can claim to have lived when George III was king.
In the interval there have been George IV, William IV, Queen Victoria, and now Edward VII.
Among those living in our midst, who have had the peculiar distinction of living under five Sovereigns, are the following :-
Mrs. Dowse, Burgh Road, 91 years of age.
Mrs. Garner, Wainfleet Road, who is 88 years of age, hale and hearty and in full possession of her faculties. This old lady can just remember the battle of Waterloo.
Mrs. Taton Winthorpe, aged 88 years.
Mrs. Marshall, Roman Bank, aged 87 years. She distinctly remembers her brother enlisting under George III.
Mrs. Woodward, Roman Bank, aged 87 years.
Mrs. Houghton, Burgh Road, aged 86.
Mrs. Clegg, Lumley Road, 85 years of age.
Mrs. Elizabeth Gray, High Street, aged 85.
Mrs. s. Howard, Sea View, about 85 years of acre.
Mrs. W. Bellamy, Lumley Road, 84 years of age, who distinctly remembers the coronation of George IV.
Mr. Horn, Winthorpe, aged 84.
Mr. Reeves, High Street, aged 83.
