Closure of Skegness Maternity Unit

Last birth at Skegness hospital?
AT least one baby has been born at Skegness Hospital since the closure of its maternity unit — and special equipment is to be installed shortly to deal with emergencies.
These facts were disclosed this week after a holidaymaker, in the later stages of her pregnancy, was rushed to the hospital. It was decided that time was too short to get her to Pilgrim Hospital, Boston and so her child was delivered in Skegness.
This would only happen in cases of emergency, said hospital administrator Mr Jim Moss, and, as yet, the hospital is not equipped with what is known as Flying Squad equipment to deal with emergencies.
However, the hospital still houses the closed maternity unit’s instruments, and local GPs and midwives are on hand to ensure that mothers and their newly-born children are not endangered in any way .
Mr Moss said that the Flying Squad equipment would be fitted at the hospital as a matter-of course.
Secretary to the Community Health Council Miss Ellen Wood said she believed there had been two emergency deliveries at the hospital.
But Mr Moss said he did not know of a second birth.
Babies may well continue to be born at Skegness despite the controversial closure of the hospital’s maternity unit.
One prospective father who is hoping that his child will be born here is Mr Colin Robinson of Rutland Road.
He said he would be prepared to hold back his wife until the very last minute so that his child could be born in Skegness.
Mrs Robinson is due to have the baby in three weeks’ time.
