Jolly Fisherman Beer Mats

Jolly Fisherman goes on beer mats
In 1968, SKEGNESS made a step forward in the field of tetestology — a study known to most people as beer man collecting.
The Jolly Fisherman, in his 60th year, found his way on to beer mats produced by Watney-Mann.
The Town Hall has received a block order for 400 of them from the Society of Tetestologists —presidents, Morecambe and Wise.
DISTRIBUTION
Mr John Brooker, the foreshore manager, said: “We got the order from the society’s secretary in Wolverhampton.
” He said theywould be distributed with the society’s magazine, which is sent all over the country, and would also be taken to the society’s eighth anniversary exchange meeting.”
‘ Mr Brooker has invited anyone interested in beer mat collecting to write to the Town Hall, from where they will be distributed.
But people more interested in beer than beer mats are also likely to seem them. They are being distributed throughout the country.
Have YOU got a Jolly Fisherman beer mat in you collection?
Ours, (illustrated) kindly given to us by Coun John Byford, marks the Skegness Carnival Week in 1977.

My dad worked at Butlins back in the 60s and told that a certain commisionair that Butlins camp used to have as camp policemen, named Roy Marsh who now owns the bus company Hail and Ride, acquired a load of Watneys Red Barrel key rings, and started selling them at the main gate at Butlins to holidaymakers as they came through the main gate to enter Butlins when he was on duty, a little sideline he had going! He then became known as the Red Barrel man to the holidaymakers. Just thought this little story might amuse you!
