First Shops Lumley Road Skegness

THIS photo shows one of the first shops in Lumley Road, Skegness, at the end of the nineteenth century.

This was F. and T. Ryan’s butcher’s shop next to the Lion Hotel, with carcases hung up in rows on the outside.
The left-hand shop later became a milk bar and is now the P. and J. Fashion Shop with bay windows above.

Meat is still sold at the right hand shop which is now Allenby’s and the frontage is almost unchanged.
The photo, issued as a postcard view, belonged to Mrs Ernest Eley, of New Lodge, Spilsby Road, Wainfleet, whose late father Mr Clarke, was manager of Ryan’s shop in its earliest days.
