Fire Destroys Morris School Records

THE tinkling of the caretaker’s telephone saved Morris Secondary School, Skegness, from burning down on Sunday morning.

Caretaker Mr Harry Jones, who was woken up by the sound of his telephone at 3 am, suspected intruders and telephoned the police. It was only then that a fire was discovered which destroyed files on the 480 pupils at the school.
The fire, which is being treated as suspected arson, is being handled by a special police investigation squad from Lincoln.
Since the fire was discovered Skegness police have been making daily enquiries at and around the school.
Police believe an intruder entered the school via a broken window and started the fire in the secretary’s office. The office was completely gutted by fire which burnt through the door of the room causing damage to the school foyer.
Part of the building is also damaged structurally and police said repair costs were estimated at £2,000.
The office contents, which included filing cabinets, a desk, switchboard and records on all the 480 pupils, were completely destroyed:
Skegness Fire Brigade were called to the blaze and a CID team headed by Det Con David Charles and Det Sgt David Smith interviewed staff and pupils the next day.
An intruder also broke into the Grammar School at the weekend but headmaster Mr John Webster described the incident as “nothing malicious.”
The intruder broke in through the kitchen, found a tin of petty cash and arranged the coins on a table to form the Words “Don’t want. ”
