Bombs at Masonic Hall
Old bombs under a pile of junk
Fifteen German bombs were found in December 1968 under piles of rubbish in a building at the back of the Masonic Hall in Ida Road.
Builder’s labourer Mr Keith Schofield, 42, of Morris Gardens, discovered them in an old copper used for washing.
He informed the police who called in army bomb disposal expert staff Sgt Colin Davies from Nottingham. The hoard comprised 13 phosphorous incendiaries, a two-inch mortar and a stack grenade, all badly corroded.
Told police
Sgt Davies said the bombs would not be dangerous unless they came into contact with fire. They were taken away to be disposed of.
It is thought they were left from 1945 when the building ceased to be an ARP headquarters. The building in which they were found, an old wash house, was full of junk.
Mr Schofield baled some of the water out of the copper but decided to stop when he saw the fins on the mortar. He wasn’t sure what he had found so he called in at the police station on his way home for dinner.
