Skegness Carnival Week 2008

Carnival Week in Skegness kicked off on Sunday 10th August with the Carnival Parade Procession.

This year’s theme is ‘Music’ and floats assembled in the Wainfleet Road Playing Fields ready for a 2.30pm set off. The Parade progressed from the playing field eventually ending up at the North Parade (X-site) pullover.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Skegness to see the parade and though a sharp downpour of rain sent them running for shelter on the seafront, they were back in high spirits within minutes as the sun finally came out.

Skegness and District Rainbows, Brownies and Guides won the best in parade with a colourful float using recycled instruments, and the Beacon Medical Practice, Skegness, won the best theme award for their swinging ’60s effort.

The Parade was just the start of what promises to be a fantastic fun week in Skegness.

I wanted to shoot video footage but this made it impossible for me to take photos at the same time so professional photographer, Paul Gooch captured the fun atmosphere and all the action of the parade especially for us!

Pavement Artists

11.00 am saw the Pavement Artists contests, located on the sea wall just north of the Pier. Lots of budding artists turned out to produce some excellent quality drawings including pictures of the Jolly Fisherman, the off-shore wind turbines and even the Beijing Olympics.

Winner of the Teen section was 14-year-old Beth (top left picture below), who drew Jolly strumming a guitar, in keeping with the musical theme of this year’s carnival. Presumably he’s playing ‘Happy Birthday to Me’ as it’s his 100th birthday this year. Next to Beth is Andrew whose drawing of a prancing Jolly Fisherman secured him a trophy in the adult section.

The Central Beach set the scene at 2.00 pm on Monday afternoon for the Sand Sculpture contest, There were lots of young would-be Michael Angelos busily creating their masterpieces eager to please the judges’ eye.

  1. were are the pic from the suncastle fancy dress at night
    thanks

  2. Will the parade be low keyed again or will there be something worth coming to watch. Last years Parade was dull and boring, hardly any walkers, even less Bands and what bands that were there were either absolutely pathetic or very very small.

Lets have some Colour, Noise and Entertainment like the years gone by, or lets just not bother. Bigger the Parade, bigger the Bands the more people and money will be there!!!!!
