Jolly Fisherman 100th Birthday Souvenir
Lincolnshire Echo
The Lincolnshire Echo has launched a special publication to celebrated the Skegness Fisherman’s 100th birthday.
At a mere 60p, the special edition is packed solid with facts and pictures accounting the last hundred years of the Skegness Jolly Fisherman which was created by artist John Hassall in 1908.
We are proud to say that many of the stories and facts contained it the publication have been drawn from our extensive historical research on this our Skegness Magazine website, though by some minor oversight, we have not been credited.
The first two-page spread tells “How a pipe-smoking, rosy-cheeked figure on a 12 guinea rail poster became an iconic symbol which has lasted 100 years”. It tell us that Jolly has “left his mark” by appearing on advertisement campaigns for Hamlet cigars to lace copies. There’s also an account of the speculation the Jolly may have had ‘a wife’
The spread of page 10 and 11 gives an account of John Hassall’s first visit to Skegness in 1936, and shows us a picture of the Vellum presented to Hassall on that visit. The Vellum (pictured below) will be on display at the Skegness Town Hall in September, along with other Skegness memorabilia, as part of the Skegness Jolly Fisherman Centenary Exhibition.
Turning the page, the next spread tell us “100 things you didn’t know about the coast” which includes research from our website -
